An easy way to understand PoC radios:

​

PoC = Push-to-Talk over Cellular

​

Think of it as a walkie-talkie that uses the mobile phone network instead of a dedicated radio tower.

Traditional radio vs. PoC radio

  • Traditional Two-Way Radios uses radio frequencies limited range (unless repeaters are used)

  • Requires radio licenses in some cases

  • Higher infrastructure costs

PoC Radios

  • directly uses 4G/5G or Wi-Fi 

  • Works almost anywhere with cellular coverage.

  • Usually doesn't require radio licenses

  • Often just needs a SIM card and service plan

Simple example:

How it works

  1. You press the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button.

  2. Your voice is sent through the cellular network or Wi-Fi.

  3. A server forwards the audio to the selected group.

  4. Everyone in that group hears your message almost immediately.
